SOUL IN DINAS ACTION WEEK

MONDAY 23rd - SUNDAY 30th AUGUST 2010

Dinas Powys Community council have invited Soul in Dinas to carry out a wonderful community project as part of this years Summer action week.

The War memorial located on the Twyn, Dinas Powys village is in need of cleaning. This is a major job and has to be done professionally as the memorial is a listed monument.

However the Community Council clerk, Mr Mike Goodfellow, has asked SID if it could clean the surrounding stone pillar stumps and paint the black metal chain links that run around sections of the memorial. Depending on how long those jobs take there will also be opportunities to carry out other maintenance work on the Twyn as directed by the local council.

This provides a wonderful opportunity for SID; working at the very centre of the community on a project that will provide a focus that symbolically allows us to thank those who gave the ultimate sacrifice, thereby allowing us the freedoms we enjoy today.

Some of the Welcome Team take a well earned rest (well a rest anyway) with a cup of tea while the meal is being served and before they help with the quiz.

Ohhh I feel another caption competition coming on.

Farah said that she could do this with one hand tied behind her back so David made her prove it.

SOUL IN DINAS - TEACHERS MEAL AT HEBRON HALL.

As part of the Soul in Dinas programme for this year we invited the teachers and school staff from the three local primary schools (St. Andrews primary, Dinas Powys infants & Murch Junior) to an evening meal at Hebron Hall.

The purpose of the invitation was to say thank you to the three schools who both educate and take such good care of the children from this community. We wanted to be able to say that we truly love, value and appreciate everyone who work in the schools; and all that they do to make this village a better place to grow up in and be a part of.

A total of 54 teachers and support staff came along last evening (21st June) all dressed up for fine dining. The wonderful catering staff provided a sumptuous three course meal which was served at table by a highly trained group (Pat's ladies) of servers from the various churches across Dinas Powys.

After the meal there was a bit of fun with a quiz, the picture round for which the teams on each table had been looking at whilst eating and chatting. All the teams did really well in that round, but they all struggled with picture two. Some realising that he looked like a politician (whatever it is that a politician may look like) and so guessed for a half mark that it was the new Secretary of state for Education, (but sorry Mr Gove, nobody got your name). It was thought that one of the teams may have got the name but when the quiz master threatened detention and confiscation of any phones that had been googling, the answer was quickly withdrawn.

The quiz was a lot of fun and got quite competitive, but controversy came at the end as the team which contained the head teachers from all three schools were adjudged to have come last (sorry I mean 7th). It was only after the results were announced that it was discovered that our commander of the score boards Matt Lewis - who regularly goes into the schools to speak in classes, had in fact counted the head teachers scores up incorrectly (He's no Carol Vorderman) losing them 10pts in the process. With the scores amended and the head teachers credibility restored (they eventually came 3rd) the winning team were awarded a big box of what the ambassador likes to spoil his guests with, Ferrero Rocher.

Everyone left Hebron with much laughter, having had a really great evening. As for the Commander of the score boards, well, Matt was educated at Dinas Powys infants and Murch junior school, so, very kindly St. Andrews have offered him additional tuition on his arithmetic.

A big thank you to all who helped to make the evening such a great success and to the schools for allowing Soul in Dinas to do this for them. A special big thank you also goes to Mr Jeff Lacey (General Manager at Hebron Hall) for allowing Soul in Dinas free use of the excellent facilities at Hebron, thereby helping to make the evening the tremendous success it was.

Thursday, 3 June 2010

As a part of our "Soul in Dinas" Summer programme we are holding a "Thank you" meal for the teachers and staff of the three local primary schools.

This event is taking place at Hebron Hall, during the evening of Monday 21st June (17 days away). Over 60 members of school staff have accepted our invitation to come and enjoy the three course meal being specially prepared for them by our highly skilled professional Chefs.

This is a wonderful opportunity to thank our local teachers and other school staff for all that they invest in the lives of the children in this community.

Helpers are needed to do various things on the night, if you can help at all, for part of the night or all of it then please speak to Brian & Pat West who have a list of things to be done.

OPEN DAY AT ST. PETERS CHURCH, DINAS POWYS

Last weekend (Fri 7th - Sun 9th May) St. Peters church in Wales, Dinas Powys held an open Church weekend.

During the Friday children from the local schools (Primary & Comprehensive) came along to the church and were shown around.

On Saturday and Sunday the church was open to the public and a large number of visitors popped in for a look around
There were various displays of different activities within the church including a display showing the work of Soul in Dinas in the community.

Pictured above are Julie Morgan & Jane Drake, both wearing their Soul in Dinas T-Shirts. They were on hand to tell people all about the activities that Soul in Dinas are involved in and how the churches work together to support acts of kindness across the community.

A C T I O N W E E K,

C O M I N G T H I S S U M M E R

Get out your Diaries.

The Soul in Dinas action week starts on Monday 23rd August with a prayer day at Bethesda Chapel.

The Teams will set out on Tuesday morning 24th August working through to Saturday 28th.

We finish the week with an open air service at Caerleon Road on Sunday afternoon 29th August.

There will be some opportunities for those who are at work during the daytime to be involved in evening action teams on the Wednesday & Thursday evenings.

Soul in Dinas needs your help again this year to reach out with the love of Christ in practical ways across this community.
Soul in Dinas has been very active during the winter months. Last Christmas we were able to supply 170 Christmas Stockings to people who were on their own over the Christmas period. For this we targeted those living in the sheltered housing areas of Dinas Powys (Fairoaks, Vale court, Hanover court & Kings Court) In addition to this, both for the content and the sentiment behind the gift, which was to show Gods love at Christmas and remind those folk that they are loved, appreciated, valued and an important part of the community we share together.

In February Soul in Dinas joined with Fairtrade Dinas Powys to support Fairtrade fortnight. In conjunction with the local Fairtrade group we held a “Mad Hatters Tea Party” at Youlden house where those who attended were served tea and toast and made hats for display at the main Fairtrade event the following weekend.

Planning for more events this summer is already underway. Prayer and planning evenings take place each week at Bethesda chapel between 6pm & 7pm. All are welcome to come along and be involved as we seek God’s path for reaching out into the community this year.

Current planning involves a “Thank You” meal for all the primary school teachers and staff in our three local schools, just to say thank you for all that they contribute to the community and in appreciation of the care and guidance they provide to the children of this village.

This event will take place at Hebron Hall during the evening of Monday 21st June, if you can help speak with Pat West. We would like to say a big thank you to Jeff Lacey, General Manager at Hebron Hall for allowing us free use of the facilities again this year.

On Wednesday 18th August between 2pm & 4:30pm there will be a Tea Dance. This event also took place last year and it was great seeing young people mingling and having great fun with the older generation in our village.

The Soul in Dinas action week is due to take place during the week beginning Monday 23rd August. There will be opportunities to be involved in teams working in all sorts of community work projects both in the daytime and in the evening. As well as our own local youngsters, we hope to attract young people from outside Dinas Powys to join us in the daytime. There will also be opportunities for those who are at work during the day to be involved in a team in the evenings.

During that week we are also hoping to hold an evangelistic outreach event at the local Skatepark and will include a gospel presentation.

The Soul in Dinas Action week will conclude on Sunday 29th August with an outdoor evangelistic service (with a guest speaker) on Caerleon Road, starting at 3pm.

Plans are also underway for Soul in Dinas to help in a major bulb planting exercise across Dinas Powys during the autumn (October) half term this year thereby helping ensure that we see lots of beautiful flowers all over the village in spring 2011.

Your help is needed if any and all of the above plans are to come about. Keep an eye out for more news as it comes through and please do get involved as much as you can. Remember, Soul in Dinas is for all ages of Christian people within the churches of Dinas Powys to come together and show the love of God to the community all around us.
"Serving Christ in the Community, Serving the Community for Christ".
